Severe trauma involving the neck can pose serious risks to the spinal cord even when there is no fracture. If the ligaments and disk attachments are disrupted, the stability of the spine is compromised. A hard cervical collar will protect the spinal cord. However, if the individual is not placed in a collar and does bend his or her neck forward in this situation, a subluxation may occur resulting in pressure on the spinal cord. This condition is detected with MRI scanning or carefully controlled flexion and extension spine X-rays monitored by a physician.. |
