Spondylolysis - Separation within the Lamina
Separation can occur between the front and the back half of the lamina. The part of the lamina affected is called the pars interarticularis so the separation is sometimes called a pars defect. The separation splits the vertebra into two parts; the first part includes the vertebral body, the pedicle, and the superior facet. The second part, including the inferior facet and spinous process. Stress across the separation line can cause back pain. This condition also can allow the development of slippage or spondylolisthesis (see figure 7-5).
